How to change robot mower blades

About 20 minutes. These steps follow what Husqvarna and Segway publish and apply to most single-disc robot mowers. Your manual wins if it differs.

Safety: turn the mower off, wear cut-resistant gloves and keep hands, children and pets away. Never work on a mower that is switched on.

You will need

  1. Prepare and protect yourself. Put on cut-resistant gloves. Robot mower blades are sharp.
  2. Turn the mower off. Power the mower off using the method in your manual. Husqvarna says to set the mower to OFF before touching the blades; Segway says to hold the OK button for 3 seconds on Navimow H2 and i2 LiDAR.
  3. Turn the mower over. Place the mower upside down on a soft, clean surface to avoid scratching the cover.
  4. Locate and clean the blades. On Husqvarna Automower, rotate the skid plate until the hole lines up with a blade screw. On other mowers, find the screws holding each blade. Brush away grass and dirt with a soft brush and damp cloth.
  5. Remove the old blade and screw. Unscrew each blade with a screwdriver that fits (cross-tip is common; a magnetic one helps). Keep one blade and screw to compare with the new one.
  6. Compare the new blade. Check length, width, hole count and hole size against the old blade. If they do not match, do not install it.
  7. Fit the new blade with a new screw. Use one blade per screw. Husqvarna says always replace the screw when you replace the blade. Tighten firmly but do not over-tighten, as Segway notes.
  8. Repeat for every blade. Replace all blades on the disc together. Do not mix old and new blades or different blade types.
  9. Check the blades pivot freely. Blades should swing on their screws. That is intentional so they can move away from obstacles.
  10. Reset the blade counter and test. If your app tracks blade hours, reset it (on Husqvarna: More, Statistics, Blade Usage, Reset). Turn the mower right side up and run it.

Fit is the seller’s claim. Where we mention blades listed to fit a mower, that comes from the product listing, not from the mower maker and not from our own measurements. Check your mower model, your current blade’s length, center hole and thickness, and the screw. Husqvarna recommends using only original blades and screws.

FAQ

Do I need special tools?
Usually a cross-tip or flat screwdriver, gloves and a soft brush. A magnetic screwdriver helps. Check your manual.
Should I replace the screws?
Husqvarna says yes, every time. Reused screws can let blades come loose.
Can I flip double-sided blades?
If your blades are double-sided, you can flip them to use the other edge, then replace them. Always check the blade is not chipped or bent.
Is it safe to change blades with the mower on?
No. Power it off first and wear gloves.
